Portugal offers a vibrant mix of culture and natural beauty, making it an appealing destination for many travelers. Although its popularity has varied, recent trends show a recovery in tourism. With around 600,000 Croats traveling abroad annually, a portion of them may find Portugal an attractive option to explore.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Croatia. It ranks 15th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, which is lower than Croatia, the safest country in that ranking. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is ranked 7th out of 160 countries, making it one of the safest countries in the world, compared to Croatia's 15th place. Both countries have similar murder rates, at 0.8 per 100,000 people, with slightly lower rates for female murders in Portugal (0.6) compared to Croatia (0.7). In terms of organized crime, Croatia has slightly better scores in some categories, but Portugal also performs well, particularly in state crime and human smuggling. Overall, while Croatia may be safer in certain aspects, Portugal remains a very safe option for travelers.
