South Africa offers a rich diversity and vibrant culture, making it an appealing destination for some of the 21 million Syrians. Despite recent fluctuations in tourism, the country shows resilience and potential, attracting foreign visitors.
South Africa's safety for tourists, including those from Syria, presents a mixed picture. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, which is indeed safer than Syria, ranked 153rd. However, South Africa has a significantly higher murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people compared to Syria's 2.2. In terms of organized crime, South Africa scores higher on several indices, indicating more prevalent crime networks and state crime. For instance, South Africa has a score of 7.0 for crime networks, while Syria scores 9.0. However, South Africa has a better score of 4.5 for human trafficking compared to Syria's 8.5. Overall, while South Africa is relatively safer than Syria in some respects, tourists should remain vigilant and informed about the local safety conditions.
