South Africa offers a diverse and vibrant cultural experience, making it an appealing destination for some Mauritian travelers. With around 100,000 Mauritians traveling abroad annually, a portion may find South Africa an attractive option despite recent fluctuations in tourism.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to Mauritius. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, while Mauritius is significantly safer at 22nd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in South Africa is notably high at 41.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Mauritius, which has a rate of just 2.6. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with South Africa at 9.5 and Mauritius at 1.8. The Global Organized Crime Index further illustrates these differences, with South Africa scoring higher in various crime categories, such as mafia groups (7.0) and arms trafficking (8.0), compared to Mauritius, which scores lower (2.0 for mafia groups and 2.0 for arms trafficking). Overall, while many tourists visit South Africa without incident, it is essential for travelers from Mauritius to remain vigilant and informed about their surroundings.
