Mauritius is an appealing destination for South African visitors, offering stunning beaches, lush scenery, and a rich cultural experience. While it may attract a segment of the 60 million South Africans, its unique features make it a noteworthy choice for those seeking leisure and adventure.
Mauritius is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from South Africa. According to the Global Peace Index, Mauritius ranks 22nd out of 160 countries, significantly safer than South Africa, which ranks 125th. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Mauritius is notably low at 2.6 per 100,000 people, compared to South Africa's high rate of 41.9. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Mauritius at 1.8 and South Africa at 9.5. The Global Organized Crime Index further illustrates the differences in safety. Mauritius scores better across various crime categories, with lower indices for mafia groups (2.0 vs. 7.0), arms trafficking (2.0 vs. 8.0), and fauna crime (3.0 vs. 7.5), among others. Overall, tourists from South Africa can feel relatively safe when visiting Mauritius, given its lower crime rates and better safety rankings.
