Ukraine offers a rich cultural and historical experience that can appeal to Dutch travelers. With 22.1 million Dutch citizens traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Ukraine to be an intriguing destination worth exploring.
Ukraine's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from the Netherlands, is a concern. While the Netherlands ranks 9th in safety among European countries for walking alone at night, Ukraine lacks comparable data. The Global Peace Index places Ukraine at 156th out of 160 countries, indicating significantly lower safety levels than the Netherlands, which ranks 18th. Murder rates further highlight this disparity, with the Netherlands reporting 0.7 murders per 100,000 people, compared to Ukraine's 3.8. Female murder rates are also higher in Ukraine (1.9) than in the Netherlands (0.4). In terms of organized crime, the Netherlands generally scores better across various categories. For instance, the mafia groups index is 4.5 for the Netherlands versus 6.0 for Ukraine, and state crime is rated at 2.5 in the Netherlands compared to 8.0 in Ukraine. Overall, while travel to Ukraine is possible, tourists should be aware of the heightened risks and take necessary precautions.
