Saudi Arabia, recognized for its rich cultural heritage and important religious sites, is increasingly becoming a significant player in global tourism. The country is investing in tourism infrastructure as part of its strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil, making it an appealing destination for some of Yemen's 33 million residents.
Saudi Arabia is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Yemen. According to the Global Peace Index, Saudi Arabia ranks 100th out of 160 countries, while Yemen ranks last at 160th. The murder rate in Saudi Arabia is significantly lower at 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Yemen's 6.8. In terms of organized crime, Saudi Arabia has lower indices for mafia and foreign crime (3.0 and 3.0, respectively) compared to Yemen's higher scores (8.0). However, both countries face challenges with human trafficking and smuggling, with identical scores of 8.5. Overall, while no country is without risk, Saudi Arabia presents a safer environment for tourists relative to Yemen.
