Saudi Arabia is becoming increasingly attractive to visitors from Somalia due to its rich cultural heritage and important religious sites. The country is actively investing in tourism infrastructure as part of its strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil, making it a more appealing destination for a segment of Somalia's 18 million population.
Saudi Arabia is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Somalia. According to the Global Peace Index, Saudi Arabia ranks 100th out of 160 countries, while Somalia ranks 150th. The murder rate in Saudi Arabia is notably low at 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Somalia, where data is unavailable. In terms of organized crime, Saudi Arabia has lower indices for mafia groups (3.0) and crime networks (6.5) compared to Somalia (9.5 and 7.5, respectively). However, both countries face challenges with state crime and human trafficking, with Saudi Arabia scoring slightly worse in those areas (8.0 and 8.5). Overall, while there are safety concerns in Saudi Arabia, it is relatively safer than Somalia for tourists.
