Saudi Arabia offers a rich cultural heritage and important religious sites, making it an increasingly appealing destination for Mauritanians. The country's efforts to diversify its economy and invest in tourism infrastructure enhance its attractiveness. This may particularly resonate with a segment of Mauritania's population of 5 million.
Saudi Arabia is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Mauritania. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Saudi Arabia ranks 100th out of 160 countries, which is lower than Mauritania's ranking of 93rd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Saudi Arabia is 0.8 per 100,000 people, slightly lower than Mauritania's rate of 1.0. However, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Saudi Arabia has higher levels of organized crime and state crime compared to Mauritania, with indices showing 3.0 for mafia groups and 8.0 for state crime in Saudi Arabia, versus 2.5 and 7.0 in Mauritania, respectively. While tourists can visit Saudi Arabia safely, it is advisable to stay informed about local laws and customs and exercise caution, as with any travel destination.
