Saudi Arabia is increasingly appealing to Belgian visitors due to its rich cultural heritage and important religious sites. The country is actively investing in tourism infrastructure as part of its strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil, making it a more attractive destination. With 8.6 million Belgians traveling abroad annually, there is potential interest among some of them in visiting Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia's safety for tourists from Belgium can be assessed through various rankings and statistics. Belgium ranks 16th in the Global Peace Index, indicating a relatively high level of safety, while Saudi Arabia is ranked 100th out of 160 countries. In terms of crime rates, Belgium has a murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, compared to Saudi Arabia's lower rate of 0.8. However, the female murder rate is slightly higher in Saudi Arabia (0.3) than in Belgium (0.2). When looking at organized crime, both countries have a mafia group index of 3.0, but Saudi Arabia scores higher in crime networks (6.5) and state crime (8.0), indicating more significant issues in these areas. Overall, while Saudi Arabia has lower murder rates, the higher rankings in organized crime and the Global Peace Index suggest that it may not be as safe for tourists compared to Belgium. Travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions.
