Portugal offers a vibrant mix of cultural richness and natural beauty, making it an appealing destination for visitors. Although the popularity of the country has varied, recent trends show a gradual increase in foreign tourist arrivals. With around 500,000 Cypriots traveling abroad annually, a portion of them may find Portugal an interesting choice for their travels.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Cyprus. It ranks 15th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, which is slightly lower than Cyprus's 11th place. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world, ranking 7th out of 160 countries, compared to Cyprus's 86th position. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a lower murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Cyprus's 1.3. Additionally, various organized crime indices suggest that while both countries have their challenges, Portugal generally exhibits lower levels of organized crime compared to Cyprus. Overall, while both countries are relatively safe, Portugal offers a secure environment for tourists.
