Cyprus is an appealing destination for some Portuguese travelers due to its rich cultural heritage and strategic location in the Mediterranean. With around 1 million Portuguese traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Cyprus an interesting option for their travels.
Cyprus is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Portugal. It ranks 11th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, which is better than Portugal's ranking of 15th. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Cyprus is ranked 86th out of 160 countries, compared to Portugal's much higher position at 7th. In terms of crime statistics, Cyprus has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, which is higher than Portugal's rate of 0.8. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Cyprus at 1.1 compared to Portugal's 0.6. Regarding organized crime, Cyprus has lower scores in some areas compared to Portugal. For example, the mafia groups index is 3.5 for Cyprus and 4.5 for Portugal, indicating a slightly better situation in Cyprus. However, Cyprus scores higher in foreign crime (7.0) compared to Portugal (5.0). Overall, while Cyprus is relatively safe, it is advisable for tourists to remain vigilant and informed about their surroundings, similar to any travel destination.
