Portugal is an appealing destination for Canadian visitors, showcasing a blend of cultural richness and natural beauty. Although its popularity has experienced some fluctuations, recent trends show a gradual increase in foreign tourist arrivals. With 5.0 million Canadians traveling abroad annually, a portion of them is likely to be drawn to Portugal's unique offerings.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Canada. It ranks 15th out of 40 European countries for safety when walking alone at night. According to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is the 7th safest country in the world, comparable to Canada, which ranks 11th. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a lower murder rate at 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Canada's 2.1. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Portugal at 0.6 and Canada at 1.0. While both countries face organized crime, Portugal generally has slightly higher indices for certain crime categories, but overall, it remains a safe place for visitors. Tourists can feel secure exploring Portugal, as it offers a peaceful environment similar to Canada.
