Malaysia offers a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it an appealing destination for some travelers from New Zealand. Although international visitor numbers are currently modest, ongoing infrastructure improvements and a variety of attractions suggest strong potential for growth. With around 200,000 New Zealanders traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Malaysia an interesting option for their travels.
Malaysia is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from New Zealand. According to the Global Peace Index, Malaysia ranks 10th out of 160 countries, indicating a relatively high level of safety, though it is not as safe as New Zealand, which ranks 4th. In terms of crime statistics, Malaysia has a lower murder rate of 0.7 per 100,000 people compared to New Zealand's 2.6. However, there are concerns regarding organized crime, with Malaysia scoring higher on various indices related to crime networks and human trafficking. While visitors should exercise standard precautions, the overall safety for tourists in Malaysia remains favorable.
