Mexico offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for international tourists. Its diverse tourism sector caters to various traveler preferences, solidifying its status as a top global tourist hotspot. Given that around 300,000 Sri Lankans travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Mexico an intriguing option for their travels.
Mexico's safety for tourists, including those from Sri Lanka, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Mexico ranks 136th out of 160 countries, indicating a lower safety level compared to Sri Lanka, which ranks 99th. Crime statistics reveal significant differences in murder rates: Sri Lanka has a murder rate of 3.5 per 100,000 people, while Mexico's rate is considerably higher at 28.2. Additionally, female murder rates are 2.2 in Sri Lanka compared to 6.2 in Mexico. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights the disparity, with Mexico scoring poorly across various crime categories. For instance, mafia groups and crime networks in Mexico score 9.0, indicating a high level of organized crime, while Sri Lanka scores 4.0 and 5.0 respectively. Overall, while many tourists visit Mexico safely, it is important for travelers from Sri Lanka to remain vigilant and informed about local conditions and safety measures.
