Myanmar offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, making it an appealing destination for some Norwegian travelers. With 1.7 million Norwegians traveling abroad each year, a portion may find Myanmar's unique tourism opportunities attractive. The country's growing tourism sector also contributes positively to its economy.
Myanmar presents significant safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to Norway. While Norway ranks 18th in safety among European countries for walking alone at night, Myanmar is ranked 145th out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index. Crime statistics highlight a stark contrast: Norway's murder rate is 0.5 per 100,000 people, whereas Myanmar's is alarmingly high at 28.4. Additionally, female murder rates are 0.6 in Norway compared to 7.3 in Myanmar. The Global Organized Crime Index further illustrates the disparity, with Myanmar scoring poorly across various categories, such as mafia groups (9.0), crime networks (7.5), and state crime (8.5), compared to Norway's much lower scores (4.5, 4.0, and 2.0, respectively). Overall, tourists from Norway should exercise caution and stay informed about the safety situation in Myanmar before traveling.
