Myanmar offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, making it an appealing destination for some travelers from Cyprus. With around 500,000 Cypriots traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Myanmar's unique tourism opportunities attractive. The country's growing tourism sector also contributes positively to its economy.
Myanmar presents significant safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Cyprus. While Cyprus ranks 11th in safety among 40 European countries for walking alone at night, Myanmar is ranked 145th out of 160 countries in the Global Peace Index. Crime statistics reveal stark differences: Cyprus has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, while Myanmar's rate is considerably higher at 28.4. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Cyprus at 1.1 and Myanmar at 7.3. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Myanmar faces severe challenges with organized crime, scoring poorly in various categories compared to Cyprus. For instance, Myanmar's mafia group index is 9.0 (with 1 being best), while Cyprus scores 3.5. Other crime-related indices for Myanmar are similarly high, indicating a more dangerous environment. In summary, tourists from Cyprus should exercise caution when considering travel to Myanmar due to the higher levels of crime and safety risks.
