Montenegro is an appealing destination for many Serbians, thanks to its beautiful Adriatic coastline and picturesque mountainous areas. Its tourism sector significantly contributes to the economy, making it a notable player in international tourism. A portion of Serbia's 7 million population finds Montenegro particularly attractive for travel.
Montenegro is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Serbia. It ranks 10th out of 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night, closely following Serbia, which ranks 13th. According to the Global Peace Index, Montenegro is ranked 35th out of 160 countries, making it safer than Serbia, which is ranked 53rd. In terms of crime statistics, Montenegro has a higher murder rate (2.4 per 100,000 people) compared to Serbia (1.1), but the rates of female murders are slightly lower in Montenegro (0.6) than in Serbia (0.7). The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that while both countries face challenges with organized crime, Montenegro generally has slightly better scores in several categories, such as human trafficking and resource crime. Overall, while there are some differences in crime rates and organized crime indices, both countries are relatively safe for tourists.
