Moldova offers a unique blend of cultural and natural attractions that could appeal to some Swedish travelers. While it currently sees relatively few tourists, its distinct offerings may attract a segment of the 4.2 million Swedes who travel abroad annually.
Moldova is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, including those from Sweden. In terms of safety while walking alone at night, Moldova ranks 33rd out of 40 countries, similar to Sweden, which ranks 36th. According to the Global Peace Index, Moldova is ranked 61st out of 160 countries, while Sweden is ranked 39th, indicating that Sweden is safer overall. Regarding crime statistics, Moldova has a higher murder rate (2.3 per 100,000 people) compared to Sweden (1.1). Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Moldova at 1.2 and Sweden at 0.5. In terms of organized crime, Moldova has a mixed profile. For example, it scores lower than Sweden in mafia groups and crime networks (4.0 compared to Sweden's 5.5), but it has higher scores in state crime (7.0) and human trafficking (7.5), indicating more challenges in these areas. Overall, while Moldova has some safety concerns, it offers a unique travel experience and is comparable to Sweden in certain safety aspects. Tourists should remain vigilant and informed about their surroundings while visiting.
