Morocco is an appealing destination for some Mauritanians due to its rich cultural heritage, historical cities, and stunning landscapes. Its unique charm and proximity make it a notable choice for a segment of the 5 million people in Mauritania.
Morocco is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Mauritania. According to the Global Peace Index, Morocco is ranked 76th out of 160 countries, making it safer than Mauritania, which is ranked 93rd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Morocco is 1.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Mauritania's lower rate of 1.0. However, Morocco has a lower female murder rate at 0.5, while data for Mauritania is not available. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Morocco has lower scores in certain categories, such as mafia groups (1.0 for Morocco vs. 2.5 for Mauritania) and foreign crime (4.0 for Morocco vs. 5.0 for Mauritania). However, Morocco has higher scores in areas like crime networks (6.5) and cannabis trade (9.0).
