Lesotho offers a unique appeal for South African visitors, thanks to its stunning mountainous landscapes and the nickname "The Kingdom in the Sky." Its dramatic scenery and distinct cultural experiences make it an intriguing destination for a segment of South Africa's 60 million residents.
Lesotho's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from South Africa, can be assessed through various crime statistics. According to the Global Peace Index, Lesotho ranks 123rd out of 160 countries, closely following South Africa, which ranks 125th. In terms of murder rates, Lesotho has a rate of 43.6 per 100,000 people, slightly higher than South Africa's 41.9. While specific statistics on female murders in Lesotho are unavailable, South Africa's rate is 9.5. The Global Organized Crime Index provides further insights, with Lesotho scoring better in several categories compared to South Africa. For instance, Lesotho has a mafia group index of 1.0 (1 being the best), while South Africa scores 7.0. Similarly, in terms of crime networks, Lesotho scores 5.0 compared to South Africa's 7.0. Overall, while both countries face challenges regarding safety, Lesotho shows relatively lower organized crime levels than South Africa. Tourists should remain vigilant and informed but can generally visit Lesotho with caution.
