Sri Lanka is an appealing travel destination for Belgian visitors, showcasing a rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. The island's tropical beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites attract international tourists, including a segment of the 8.6 million Belgians who travel abroad annually.
Sri Lanka's safety for tourists, including those from Belgium, presents some concerns. While Belgium ranks 16th in the Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka is ranked 99th out of 160 countries. The murder rate in Sri Lanka is higher at 3.5 per 100,000 people compared to Belgium's 1.1. Additionally, female murder rates are significantly higher in Sri Lanka (2.2) versus Belgium (0.2). In terms of organized crime, Belgium generally has lower indices, indicating a safer environment. For example, Belgium's state crime index is 2.0, while Sri Lanka's is much higher at 7.0. Other crime-related indices also show that Belgium is safer across various categories. Overall, while Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination, travelers from Belgium should remain vigilant and informed about local safety conditions.
