Belgium offers a captivating blend of cultural heritage and modern attractions, making it an appealing destination for some Sri Lankan travelers. With its historical significance, stunning architecture, and vibrant cities like Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp, it could attract a portion of the 300,000 Sri Lankans who travel abroad annually.
Belgium is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Sri Lanka. While it ranks 39th among 40 European countries in terms of safety when walking alone at night, it holds a much higher position in the Global Peace Index, where it is ranked 16th out of 160 countries, indicating a relatively safe environment compared to Sri Lanka, which is ranked 99th. In terms of crime statistics, Belgium has a lower murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people compared to Sri Lanka's 3.5. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Belgium at 0.2 and Sri Lanka at 2.2. Regarding organized crime, Belgium scores better in several categories, such as state crime (2.0 for Belgium vs. 7.0 for Sri Lanka) and mafia groups (3.0 vs. 4.0). Overall, while there are safety considerations to keep in mind, Belgium is statistically safer than Sri Lanka for tourists.
