Iraq offers a unique appeal for Turkish visitors due to its rich historical and cultural heritage, including ancient sites like Babylon and the scenic Mesopotamian plains. While it faces modern infrastructure challenges, it could attract a segment of the 2.7 million Turks who travel abroad annually.
Iraq is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Türkiye. According to the Global Peace Index, Iraq ranks 148th out of 160 countries, while Türkiye is ranked 137th. The murder rate in Iraq is significantly higher at 10.1 per 100,000 people, compared to Türkiye's 2.5. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that Iraq faces challenges with organized crime, with higher indices in various categories compared to Türkiye. While Türkiye has a relatively safer environment for walking alone at night, specific data for Iraq is lacking. Overall, potential tourists from Türkiye should exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation in Iraq before traveling.
