India offers a rich blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and modern amenities, making it an appealing destination for some Maldivians. With a significant number of foreign visitors each year drawn to its historical sites and diverse ecosystems, India could attract a portion of the 1 million Maldivians looking for travel experiences.
India's safety for tourists from the Maldives can be assessed through various crime statistics and indices. According to the Global Peace Index, India ranks 114th out of 160 countries, while there is no available data for the Maldives. In terms of homicide rates, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime reports a murder rate of 2.9 per 100,000 people in India, compared to just 0.6 in the Maldives. Female murder rates are similar, with India at 2.5 and the Maldives at 2.6. The Global Organized Crime Index provides further context, with India scoring lower (indicating worse conditions) in several categories compared to the Maldives. For example, India has higher scores for crime networks (6.0), state crime (6.0), and human trafficking (7.0), while the Maldives scores better in these areas. Overall, while India has areas of concern regarding safety, many tourists visit the country without incident. It is advisable for travelers to stay informed, exercise caution, and follow local guidelines while visiting.
