Haiti offers a unique blend of vibrant culture and rich history, making it potentially appealing to some Mexican travelers. Despite a plateau in foreign tourist arrivals, the country has the potential to attract a portion of the 7.3 million Mexicans who travel abroad annually.
Haiti's safety for tourists, including those from Mexico, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Haiti ranks 141st out of 160 countries, while Mexico ranks slightly better at 136th. In terms of murder rates, Haiti has a rate of 13.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Mexico's higher rate of 28.2. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that both countries face significant challenges with organized crime, but Mexico generally scores worse across various categories. For instance, mafia groups and crime networks score 9.0 in Mexico compared to 8.0 and 6.0 in Haiti, respectively. While Haiti's murder rate is lower, the overall crime environment remains complex. Travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation before visiting.
