Haiti offers a unique blend of vibrant culture and rich history, making it an intriguing option for some Canadian travelers. While foreign tourist arrivals have stabilized in recent years, the country's appeal could attract a segment of the 5 million Canadians who travel internationally each year.
Haiti is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Canada. According to the Global Peace Index, Haiti ranks 141st out of 160 countries, while Canada is ranked 11th. The murder rate in Haiti is significantly higher, at 13.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Canada's rate of 2.1. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Haiti faces challenges with organized crime, scoring higher in various categories compared to Canada. For instance, mafia groups in Haiti are rated at 8.0 (with 10 being the worst), while Canada is at 5.0. Given these statistics, travelers from Canada should exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation in Haiti before planning their visit.
