Ethiopia offers a compelling attraction for some Djiboutians, thanks to its rich culture and historical sites. The country's diverse tourism options, including cultural, adventure, and business experiences, make it an appealing destination for a segment of Djibouti's population of around 1 million.
Ethiopia's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Djibouti, is a concern based on various safety indices. The Global Peace Index ranks Ethiopia 142nd out of 160 countries, indicating a lower level of safety compared to Djibouti, which ranks 117th. In terms of crime statistics, Ethiopia has a murder rate of 8.8 per 100,000 people. The Global Organized Crime Index also shows higher levels of organized crime in Ethiopia, with indices indicating more significant issues in areas such as crime networks (Ethiopia: 6.5 vs. Djibouti: 5.0) and arms trafficking (Ethiopia: 7.0 vs. Djibouti: 6.0). While Ethiopia has rich cultural and historical attractions, potential travelers should be aware of these safety concerns and consider taking necessary precautions.
