Cyprus offers a compelling destination for some Spanish travelers, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and strategic location in the Mediterranean. With 7 million Spaniards traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Cyprus appealing for its unique tourism dynamics and opportunities for cultural exchange.
Cyprus is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Spain. It ranks 11th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, making it safer than Spain, which ranks 22nd. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Cyprus is ranked 86th out of 160 countries, while Spain is significantly safer at 23rd. In terms of crime statistics, Cyprus has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, compared to Spain's lower rate of 0.6. For female murders, Cyprus has a rate of 1.1, while Spain has 0.4. When looking at organized crime, Cyprus scores better than Spain in several categories, such as mafia groups (3.5 vs. 6.0) and arms trafficking (2.5 vs. 4.0). However, Spain has lower scores in areas like drug trade, indicating a more significant issue with certain types of crime. Overall, while Cyprus has some crime concerns, it remains a relatively safe choice for tourists.
