Cuba offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty, making it an appealing destination for some Turkish travelers. With its colonial architecture, vibrant salsa music, and stunning beaches, it plays a significant role in the country's identity and economy. Annually, 2.7 million Turks travel abroad, suggesting that a portion may find Cuba an intriguing option.
Cuba is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Türkiye, despite some differences in crime statistics. According to the Global Peace Index, Cuba ranks 96th out of 160 countries, while Türkiye is ranked 137th. Although Cuba has a higher murder rate (5.0 per 100,000 people) compared to Türkiye (2.5), it is important to note that the safety of walking alone at night in Türkiye is lower, as it ranks 31st among 40 European countries, with no specific data available for Cuba. In terms of organized crime, Cuba shows better indices than Türkiye in several categories. For instance, Cuba has a lower score for mafia groups (4.0 vs. 8.0 for Türkiye) and crime networks (2.5 vs. 7.5). Additionally, Cuba scores significantly better in terms of foreign crime (1.0 vs. 5.0) and arms trafficking (1.5 vs. 9.0). Overall, while both countries have their safety concerns, Cuba may present a relatively safer environment for tourists from Türkiye.
