Colombia is an appealing destination for Chilean travelers due to its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. With around 2.2 million international visitors each year, it holds a significant place in global tourism. Given that approximately 500,000 Chileans travel abroad annually, a portion of them is likely to consider Colombia for their travels.
Colombia presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Chile. According to the Global Peace Index, Colombia ranks 143rd out of 160 countries, while Chile is much safer at 62nd. The murder rate in Colombia is significantly higher, with 27.5 per 100,000 people compared to Chile's 3.6. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Colombia faces more severe organized crime issues, with higher scores across various categories, such as mafia groups (Colombia 9.5 vs. Chile 4.0) and drug trafficking (Colombia 9.5 vs. Chile 7.0). While many tourists visit Colombia without incident, it's important for travelers from Chile to stay informed and exercise caution.
