Cameroon presents a compelling destination for some Nigerians, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and diverse natural attractions. As a key part of its economic development, the tourism sector plays a significant role in the country, appealing to a segment of Nigeria's 219 million population.
Cameroon is relatively safer for tourists compared to Nigeria, based on various crime statistics. According to the Global Peace Index, Cameroon ranks 135th out of 160 countries, while Nigeria is ranked 144th. The murder rate in Cameroon is significantly lower at 4.5 per 100,000 people compared to Nigeria's 22.0. In terms of organized crime, Cameroon generally scores better than Nigeria in several categories, including mafia groups (Cameroon 4.0 vs. Nigeria 5.5) and the heroin trade (Cameroon 4.5 vs. Nigeria 6.0). However, both countries face challenges related to crime, and travelers should remain vigilant and informed about local conditions.
