Canada offers a unique blend of cultural charm and natural beauty, making it an appealing destination for some Mauritanians. Although there has been a recent decline in tourist arrivals, the country still attracts millions of international visitors annually, suggesting it holds significant interest for a segment of Mauritania's 5 million population.
Canada is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Mauritania. According to the Global Peace Index, Canada ranks 11th out of 160 countries, indicating a high level of safety compared to Mauritania, which ranks 93rd. In terms of crime statistics, Canada's murder rate is 2.1 per 100,000 people, while Mauritania's is lower at 1.0. However, Canada has a more developed framework for addressing crime, reflected in its lower scores for organized crime and human trafficking. For example, Canada's state crime index is 2.0, compared to Mauritania's 7.0, and its human trafficking index is 3.5 compared to Mauritania's 7.5. Overall, while no country is without risks, Canada is statistically safer than Mauritania, making it a favorable destination for tourists.
