Burundi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an intriguing option for some Belgian travelers. Although its tourism sector is still developing, the country's distinctive cultural assets and strategic location in East Africa could attract a portion of the 8.6 million Belgians who travel abroad annually.
Burundi presents significant safety concerns for tourists, including those from Belgium. While Belgium ranks 16th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, Burundi is ranked 127th out of 160 countries, with a much higher murder rate of 6.1 per 100,000 people. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that while Belgium has relatively low rates of organized crime, Burundi faces more severe challenges, particularly in state crime (ranked 9.0) and human trafficking (ranked 8.5). Overall, travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation in Burundi before planning a visit.
