Burundi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an intriguing option for some travelers from Luxembourg. Although its tourism sector is still developing, the country's distinctive cultural assets and strategic positioning could attract a segment of the 1.8 million Luxembourgers who travel abroad annually.
Burundi presents certain safety concerns for tourists, including those from Luxembourg. While Luxembourg ranks 27th in safety among European countries for walking alone at night, there is no comparable data for Burundi. According to the Global Peace Index, Burundi is ranked 127th out of 160 countries, indicating a lower level of safety. Crime statistics reveal a significant disparity in murder rates: Luxembourg has a murder rate of 0.6 per 100,000 people, while Burundi's rate is much higher at 6.1. Additionally, female murder rates are 0.0 in Luxembourg compared to 2.3 in Burundi. The Global Organized Crime Index also highlights differences in crime dynamics. Both countries score 1.0 for mafia groups, but Burundi has higher scores in various categories, such as state crime (9.0) and human trafficking (8.5), indicating more significant challenges in these areas. Overall, tourists from Luxembourg should exercise caution when traveling to Burundi, considering these safety and crime statistics.
