Belgium is an appealing destination for some segments of Senegal's 17 million population, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and vibrant cities like Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp. The country's blend of history and modern attractions contributes to its global tourism appeal.
Belgium is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Senegal. According to the Global Peace Index, Belgium ranks 16th out of 160 countries, indicating a high level of safety compared to Senegal, which ranks 82nd. However, in terms of safety while walking alone at night, Belgium ranks 39th among 40 European countries, suggesting some concerns in that specific area. When looking at crime statistics, Belgium has a murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, compared to Senegal's 0.3. While Belgium's murder rate is higher, it is still relatively low overall. In terms of organized crime, Belgium has slightly higher indices for crime networks and drug trade compared to Senegal, but it also shows lower indices for mafia groups and state crime. Overall, while there are some safety concerns, especially at night, Belgium remains a safer destination than Senegal in many respects. Tourists should exercise standard precautions, as they would in any country.
