South Africa is an appealing destination for some of the approximately 20 million Zambians, thanks to its rich diversity and vibrant culture. Despite recent fluctuations in tourism, the country remains resilient and offers significant opportunities for visitors.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to Zambia. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Zambia's 55th position. In terms of crime statistics, South Africa has a notably higher murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Zambia's 5.4. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that South Africa faces greater challenges with organized crime, scoring higher in categories such as mafia groups (7.0 vs. 3.0 for Zambia) and arms trafficking (8.0 vs. 4.0 for Zambia). While many tourists visit South Africa without incident, it is advisable for travelers from Zambia to remain vigilant and informed about their surroundings, as the safety landscape differs significantly between the two countries.
