South Africa offers a rich cultural experience and diverse attractions, making it an appealing destination for some Ukrainian travelers. With 11 million Ukrainians traveling abroad annually, a portion may find South Africa an interesting choice despite recent fluctuations in tourism.
South Africa presents a mixed safety profile for tourists, including those from Ukraine. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, which is safer than Ukraine, ranked 156th. However, crime rates are notably higher in South Africa, with a murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people compared to Ukraine's 3.8. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with South Africa at 9.5 versus Ukraine's 1.9. In terms of organized crime, both countries have similar indices, but South Africa scores slightly worse in several categories, such as mafia groups (7.0) and human trafficking (4.5). However, South Africa has lower scores for flora crime (3.5) and human smuggling (4.0), indicating some areas of relative safety. Overall, while South Africa is statistically safer than Ukraine in terms of organized crime, the higher crime rates, particularly violent crime, suggest that tourists should exercise caution and stay informed about their surroundings.
