South Africa offers a diverse and vibrant cultural experience, making it an appealing destination for visitors from Eswatini. With around 300,000 Swazis traveling abroad annually, a portion of them is likely to be drawn to South Africa, highlighting its potential as a travel choice despite recent fluctuations in foreign visitor numbers.
South Africa presents a higher safety risk for tourists compared to Eswatini. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa is ranked 125th out of 160 countries, while Eswatini is ranked 101st. The murder rate in South Africa is significantly higher at 41.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Eswatini's 12.7. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that South Africa has more severe organized crime issues, with higher scores across various categories, including mafia groups (7.0), crime networks (7.0), and arms trafficking (8.0). In contrast, Eswatini scores much lower in these areas, indicating a safer environment for tourists. Overall, while many tourists visit South Africa without incident, it is advisable for travelers from Eswatini to exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions.
