South Africa offers a diverse and vibrant cultural experience, making it an appealing option for some Portuguese travelers. With around 1 million Portuguese traveling abroad annually, there is potential for a portion of them to choose South Africa as their destination, despite recent fluctuations in tourism.
South Africa presents a different safety landscape for tourists compared to Portugal. While Portugal ranks 7th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, South Africa ranks 125th and has a significantly higher murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that South Africa faces challenges with organized crime, with higher indices across various categories compared to Portugal. For instance, South Africa scores 7.0 for mafia groups and crime networks, while Portugal scores 4.5 and 6.0, respectively. Overall, tourists from Portugal should exercise caution when traveling to South Africa, as the safety conditions differ markedly, with higher crime rates and a less favorable ranking in global safety indices.
