South Africa offers a diverse and vibrant cultural experience, making it an appealing destination for some of the 33 million Mozambicans. Despite recent fluctuations in tourism, the country shows resilience and potential in attracting foreign visitors.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Mozambique. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, while Mozambique is ranked higher at 106th. In terms of crime statistics, South Africa has a significantly higher murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Mozambique's 3.5. Additionally, the rate of female murders in South Africa is notably concerning at 9.5, while data for Mozambique is not available. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights differences in safety, with South Africa scoring worse in several categories, including mafia groups (7.0), arms trafficking (8.0), and synthetic drugs (8.5). In contrast, Mozambique's scores indicate a lower level of organized crime, particularly in areas like human trafficking and flora crime. Overall, while South Africa has many attractions for tourists, it is advisable to exercise caution and stay informed about safety conditions, especially when compared to Mozambique.
