South Africa offers a diverse and vibrant cultural experience, making it an appealing destination for some Malagasy visitors. Despite recent fluctuations in tourism, the country shows resilience and potential, attracting a segment of Madagascar's 30 million population.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Madagascar. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Madagascar's 43rd position. The murder rate in South Africa is notably high at 41.9 per 100,000 people, while specific data for Madagascar is not available. In terms of organized crime, South Africa scores worse than Madagascar across several categories, with higher indices indicating more severe issues, such as arms trafficking (South Africa: 8.0 vs. Madagascar: 4.5) and synthetic drugs (South Africa: 8.5 vs. Madagascar: 2.0). Overall, while many tourists visit South Africa safely, it is advisable for those coming from Madagascar to remain vigilant and informed about local safety conditions.
