South Africa is an appealing destination for some of Gabon's 2 million residents, thanks to its rich diversity and vibrant culture. While visitor numbers have varied in recent years, the country shows resilience and potential in attracting tourists.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, including those from Gabon. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa is ranked 125th out of 160 countries, which is lower than Gabon's ranking of 116th. The murder rate in South Africa is notably high at 41.9 per 100,000 people, with female murders at 9.5. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights the challenges, with South Africa scoring poorly in several categories related to organized crime, such as mafia groups (7.0), crime networks (7.0), and arms trafficking (8.0). In contrast, Gabon generally scores better in these areas, indicating a relatively safer environment. Overall, while South Africa has much to offer tourists, it is advisable for visitors to remain vigilant and informed about safety measures while traveling in the country.
