South Africa offers a rich diversity and vibrant culture, making it an appealing destination for some of the 28 million people in Cameroon. Despite recent fluctuations in tourism, the country shows resilience and potential for attracting visitors.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, including those from Cameroon. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa ranks 125th out of 160 countries, which is an improvement compared to Cameroon’s ranking of 135th. However, crime rates indicate significant differences: South Africa has a murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people, compared to Cameroon’s 4.5. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with South Africa at 9.5 and Cameroon at 2.3. In terms of organized crime, South Africa scores higher on various indices, indicating greater challenges. For example, it has a score of 7.0 for mafia groups and 8.0 for arms trafficking, while Cameroon scores 4.0 and 6.5, respectively. Overall, while South Africa may be safer than Cameroon according to some rankings, it is essential for tourists to remain vigilant and informed about local safety conditions and crime statistics when visiting.
