South Africa is an appealing destination for some Burundians, thanks to its rich diversity and vibrant culture. While visitor numbers have varied in recent years, the country's tourism potential remains strong, attracting a segment of Burundi's 13 million population.
South Africa presents certain safety concerns for tourists, including those from Burundi. According to the Global Peace Index, South Africa is ranked 125th out of 160 countries, closely following Burundi, which is ranked 127th. When examining crime statistics, South Africa has a significantly higher murder rate of 41.9 per 100,000 people compared to Burundi's 6.1. Additionally, female murder rates are also higher in South Africa (9.5) than in Burundi (2.3). The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights the differences in crime dynamics. South Africa scores poorly in various categories, such as mafia groups (7.0), crime networks (7.0), and human trafficking (4.5), indicating a more challenging environment compared to Burundi, which scores better in most areas. Overall, while both countries face safety challenges, South Africa has higher crime rates and organized crime concerns, making it essential for tourists to remain vigilant and informed while traveling there.
