Yemen offers a unique appeal for American travelers interested in its rich history and stunning landscapes. While it faces significant challenges, it may attract a niche audience among the 33.5 million Americans who travel internationally each year.
Yemen is currently considered very unsafe for tourists, including those from the United States. It ranks 160th out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index, indicating a high level of violence and instability. The murder rate in Yemen is comparable to that of the United States at 6.8 per 100,000 people, but other crime indices suggest a more significant presence of organized crime and violence in Yemen. For instance, Yemen scores poorly on the Global Organized Crime Index, with high scores in areas such as mafia activity (8.0) and human trafficking (8.5). Given these factors, travel to Yemen is highly discouraged for U.S. citizens.
