Yemen offers a unique appeal for some Mauritanians due to its rich history and culture, as well as its stunning landscapes. However, the country's challenges may limit its attractiveness as a travel destination for the broader population of approximately 5 million Mauritanians.
Yemen is currently considered very unsafe for tourists, including those coming from Mauritania. According to the Global Peace Index, Yemen ranks last at 160th out of 160 countries, while Mauritania is ranked 93rd. The murder rate in Yemen is significantly higher at 6.8 per 100,000 people compared to Mauritania's 1.0. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Yemen faces serious challenges with organized crime, scoring much worse than Mauritania in various categories. For instance, Yemen has a mafia group index of 8.0 (compared to Mauritania's 2.5) and a crime network index of 7.0 (compared to Mauritania's 4.5). Overall, the data suggests that tourists should exercise extreme caution and consider the risks before traveling to Yemen.
