Uruguay presents an appealing option for Portuguese travelers, boasting a vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. Nestled between Brazil and Argentina, it features a variety of attractions that can entice both leisure and business visitors. With around 1 million Portuguese traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Uruguay an intriguing destination.
Uruguay is generally considered a relatively safe destination for tourists, including those from Portugal. According to the Global Peace Index, Uruguay ranks 51st out of 160 countries, indicating a moderate level of safety. However, it is important to note that Uruguay's murder rate is significantly higher than Portugal's, with 8.9 murders per 100,000 people compared to Portugal's 0.8. While Portugal ranks 7th in safety among European countries, Uruguay does have lower indices for organized crime compared to Portugal, with a score of 1.5 for mafia groups versus Portugal's 4.5. Despite this, tourists should remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions while traveling in Uruguay.
