The United States is a prominent tourist destination, appealing to many with its diverse cultural landmarks, natural attractions, and iconic cities. Its status as a leading country in international tourist revenue underscores its importance in global tourism. Among the 4.1 million Bulgarians who travel abroad annually, a portion may find the United States an appealing choice for their travels.
The safety of the United States for tourists from Bulgaria can be assessed through various crime statistics. Bulgaria ranks 21st among 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night, indicating a relatively safe environment. In contrast, the United States is ranked 130th out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index, suggesting it is less safe than Bulgaria, which ranks 26th. Murder rates further illustrate this disparity: Bulgaria has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, while the United States has a significantly higher rate of 6.8. Additionally, female murder rates are 0.8 in Bulgaria compared to 2.9 in the United States. Regarding organized crime, Bulgaria generally scores better on several indices compared to the United States. For example, mafia groups in Bulgaria score 4.5 (better) versus 5.0 in the U.S., and while both countries have a score of 6.5 for crime networks, Bulgaria fares better in other areas like arms traffic (3.5 vs. 6.5) and drug trades. In summary, while the United States offers many attractions, tourists from Bulgaria should be aware of the higher crime rates and potential safety concerns. It is advisable to stay informed and take standard safety precautions while traveling.
