Uganda, known as the "Pearl of Africa," boasts remarkable landscapes and diverse wildlife, making it an appealing destination for some Maltese travelers. With around 200,000 Maltese traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Uganda's vast savannahs, stunning waterfalls, and unique experiences, such as encountering mountain gorillas, particularly enticing. However, it remains relatively underexplored in global tourism.
Uganda's safety for tourists, including those from Malta, presents some concerns. While Malta ranks 26th among 40 European countries for safety when walking alone at night, Uganda is ranked 124th out of 160 countries in the Global Peace Index. In terms of crime statistics, Malta has a significantly lower murder rate of 0.4 per 100,000 people, compared to Uganda's 8.5. Additionally, Malta reports no female murders, while Uganda has a rate of 4.0. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Malta performs better across various crime categories, with lower scores indicating less organized crime activity. For example, Malta scores 1.5 for mafia groups, while Uganda scores 5.0. Overall, while Uganda offers rich cultural and natural attractions, tourists should exercise caution and stay informed about local safety conditions.
