Uganda, known as the "Pearl of Africa," boasts beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity, making it an appealing destination for some Burundians. With its vast savannahs, stunning waterfalls, and dense rainforests that are home to diverse wildlife, including mountain gorillas, it offers unique attractions. However, it remains relatively underexplored in global tourism, which may limit its appeal to the broader population of Burundi's 13 million residents.
Uganda is generally considered to be as safe for tourists as Burundi, with both countries ranked similarly in the Global Peace Index—Uganda at 124th and Burundi at 127th out of 160 countries. In terms of crime statistics, Uganda has a higher murder rate at 8.5 per 100,000 people compared to Burundi's 6.1. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Uganda at 4.0 and Burundi at 2.3. Regarding organized crime, Burundi scores better in several categories, such as mafia groups (1.0 vs. Uganda's 5.0) and crime networks (4.5 vs. Uganda's 7.0). However, Uganda has lower scores in areas like human trafficking and arms trafficking compared to Burundi. Overall, while both countries face challenges related to safety and crime, tourists from Burundi can expect a similar level of safety when visiting Uganda.
